AgriPolk: When Education Meets Industry Expertise

Bridging the gap between the classroom and the field is a mission that requires vision, and Dean Belkis Capeles is leading that charge with impressive momentum. As the Dean of Workforce Education, Academics, Computer Systems, and Business Analysis at Polk State College, Capeles oversees the innovative AgriPolk program—a fresh initiative that is already making waves since its launch last fall.

I recently had the opportunity to talk with Capeles to discuss the program’s progress and its future in our ag community. She shared that the foundational months have been dedicated to building a robust support network.

“Since the launch, we’ve successfully established advisory work groups both internally and externally,” Capeles noted. These groups consist of seasoned professionals from the agriculture community, ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant to the evolving needs of the industry.

A primary goal of AgriPolk is to provide a seamless academic journey for local students. Through the GatorTracks program, students can earn an Associate of Arts degree at Polk State College while securing a clear pathway to the University of Florida’s prestigious agriculture program. This collaboration keeps talent close to home while providing a bridge to higher education.

In addition, the program is collaborating with local public school ag academies and FFA chapters to potentially offer specialized agricultural certifications.

When I asked Capeles what the community could do to help fuel this growth, her response was clear and focused on the future. The program is currently seeking student sponsorships to alleviate the financial burden on rising leaders. There is also a pressing need for the procurement of modern equipment, specifically ag drone technology, through private donations or grant funding. Finally, she emphasized the importance of internships, which provide students with the hands-on experience necessary to thrive in Florida’s diverse agricultural landscape.

The AgriPolk program is a testament to what happens when education meets industry expertise. We owe a debt of gratitude to Polk State College and our local agricultural academies for their tireless work. By investing in our students today, they are ensuring that the backbone of our community remains strong for generations to come.
