Eavesdropping on Ag Icons

If you’re anything like me, then there’s nothing more captivating than listening to someone who is not only knowledgeable but also has firsthand experience take a deep dive into a topic they are passionate about. It’s akin to getting a front-row seat at the best TED Talk, minus the predictable formulaic structure.

That’s probably why I’ve been hooked on the Florida Farm Bureau’s Rural Recharge podcast, which was launched in March 2023. Even though it took me about a year to come across it myself, I’ve been a devoted listener since 2024.

The podcast, hosted by Florida Farm Bureau President Jeb Smith, uses candid conversations with growers, ranchers, experts, and policymakers to help those outside the Florida ag sector not only better understand but also appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes.

In fact, many of the individuals we speak with in the feature articles of this magazine have been guests on Rural Recharge, including Sandra TenBroeck, Jason and Amanda Watts, Dr. Scott Angle, Marshal Sewell, Scott Kirouac, and Carrie Baker.

Whether the discussion is about citrus, Florida forestry, faith, community, or even mental health, the unscripted dialog teaches consumers about more than just where their food comes from. It gives insight into the people, challenges, history, and production processes behind the food, clothing, and products we use every day.

As editor of a magazine that aims to do the same, I have a deep appreciation for the insightful questions and ease with which the podcast is able to introduce concepts and develop them without getting bogged down.

It’s more than a podcast; it’s a seat at the table of changemakers.
