Just as consumers are feeling the sting of higher prices at the grocery store and gas pump, Florida farmers are facing rising costs for nearly every input they rely on to produce food. Fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, fuel, equipment, and labor have all become more expensive, placing additional pressure on already thin profit margins.
For many Florida growers, fertilizer is one of the largest annual operating expenses. Sulfur, often referred to as the fourth major crop nutrient after nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, plays a critical role in crop production. It’s also a key ingredient in the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers, making it an essential component of Florida agriculture. As sulfur prices continue to surge, the effects are rippling throughout the fertilizer industry.
Several factors are driving the increase, but global conflicts remain among the most significant. According to the International Energy Agency, nearly half of all seaborne sulfur trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz near Iran. Ongoing unrest and periodic disruptions in the region have tightened global supplies and created uncertainty throughout the market. Acuity Commodities reports that sulfur prices, which were already elevated before tensions escalated, have climbed another 35% to 40% since the conflict with Iran started.
At the same time, China, one of the world’s largest sulfur exporters, has sharply reduced its exports to protect its domestic supply. Those restrictions have further tightened an already strained global market and contributed to record-high sulfur prices.
For Florida farmers, the consequences extend far beyond sulfur itself. Higher sulfur costs increase the cost of producing phosphate fertilizers, a key nutrient source for many of the state’s citrus, vegetable, row crop, and nursery operations. As fertilizer prices continue to rise, growers are left with higher production costs that can ultimately work their way through the food supply chain, contributing to higher prices for consumers at the checkout counter.
