Launch Your Dream With Small Farm Start-Up School

If you want to start a farm, you probably already know it’s going to take much more than seeds, dirt, and a dream. While you might be envisioning rows of crops under a bright blue sky or the satisfaction of raising healthy heifers, you also need a solid business plan and some practical know-how to get your ideas up and running.

If you‘re ready to move from dreaming to doing, the Small Farm Start-up School is your ideal launching pad. Hosted by UF/IFAS, this comprehensive nine-week program provides aspiring farmers with the essential tools and knowledge needed to build a successful agricultural enterprise from the ground up.

Practical Learning for the Modern Farmer

The Small Farm Start-up School 2026 is made for those ready to launch a small farm or alternative agricultural business. The program features a unique hybrid format, blending convenience with valuable hands-on experience.

Each week, you’ll join Tuesday evening Zoom classes (perfect for busy schedules) along with in-person farm tours starting April 14 and networking events. On these tours, you’ll visit local farms, observe real operations, and learn directly from experienced growers.

Expert presentations and farmer panels are core to the curriculum, giving you first-hand perspectives on crop selection, livestock care, meeting regulations, and evaluating farm enterprises. The focus is always practical: real stories, actionable advice, and direct access to local agricultural experts.

Building a Strong Business

Every farm needs a solid foundation, which is why business planning is a key element of the course. You’ll get clear, structured instruction on developing a comprehensive farm business plan. The program covers financials, marketing, operations, and compliance, helping you anticipate challenges and spot new opportunities.

As you develop your business plan, instructors will review it and provide detailed feedback to strengthen every section. You’ll leave the course with a professional, actionable plan that sets you up for long-term success.

The Benefits of Enrollment

Enrolling in the Small Farm Start-up School opens up a supportive network and offers direct access to industry experts. You can explore specialties like hydroponics, poultry, or agritourism, and participate in networking events that connect you with peers and established farmers. These relationships, resources, and local insights help you avoid common pitfalls and build confidence faster.

Furthermore, all graduates meet the education requirements for Farm Service Agency (FSA) borrowers, so you’ll be eligible for funding opportunities. More than just practical skills, you’ll leave with respected credentials and a strong support system.
