The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) names longtime faculty member and peanut breeder Barry Tillman as interim Center director of the North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC), effective July 31, 2026.
Tillman will lead research, Extension and teaching programs across NFREC’s campuses in Quincy, Marianna and Live Oak, supporting agricultural producers, natural resource managers and rural communities throughout North Florida.
He will succeed Dean Pringle, who recently was appointed chair of the UF/IFAS Department of Animal Sciences.
A nationally recognized expert in peanut breeding, Tillman has spent decades with UF/IFAS developing improved peanut varieties with higher yields, stronger disease resistance and enhanced quality. His work has contributed to the competitiveness of Florida’s peanut industry, a key part of the agricultural economy in North Florida and across the Southeast.
Known for his collaborative approach, Tillman works closely with Extension agents and farmers to connect plant breeding, crop management and economic considerations to help producers make informed decisions.
“Dr. Tillman did a wonderful job as interim Center director at NFREC previously,” said Robert Gilbert, UF/IFAS dean for research and executive director for academic affairs. “We are very glad that he is returning to serve our faculty, staff, students and stakeholders in north Florida.”
NFREC integrates research, education and Extension to deliver science-based solutions in crop production, livestock, water conservation and forestry. The center’s work addresses real-world challenges while supporting the long-term sustainability of the region’s agricultural and natural resource industries.
Tillman’s leadership will help advance ongoing research, strengthen community engagement and position NFREC to respond to emerging challenges facing agriculture and rural economies in North Florida.
