Laminitis in Horses: Why Early Detection Can Save Your Horse’s Hooves

Laminitis is a painful hoof disease that can develop quickly and, if left untreated, may lead to permanent damage, chronic lameness, or even the loss of a beloved horse. The good news is that recognizing the early signs and understanding the risk factors can significantly improve your horse’s chances of recovery.

What Is Laminitis?

Laminitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the sensitive laminae inside the hoof. These tissues act like Velcro, securing the coffin bone to the inner hoof wall. When inflammation occurs, the bond between these structures weakens, causing severe pain and potentially allowing the coffin bone to rotate or sink within the hoof capsule. Even mild inflammation can quickly become a serious medical issue.

Recognizing the Early Signs

One of the greatest challenges with laminitis is that the earliest warning signs can be subtle. Horses often show signs of discomfort before obvious lameness develops.

  • Frequent Weight Shifting – A horse experiencing hoof pain may repeatedly shift weight from one foot to another while standing.
  • Increased Hoof Heat – Healthy hooves are generally cool to the touch. Excessive warmth in the hoof wall or sole may indicate inflammation within the foot.
  • Strong Digital Pulse – The digital pulse can be felt along the sides of the fetlock. A stronger-than-normal, throbbing pulse often signals increased blood flow associated with inflammation.
  • Stiffness or Reluctance to Move – Horses with early laminitis may take short, hesitant strides or appear stiff when walking. Turning on hard surfaces can be particularly uncomfortable, and some horses may resist moving altogether.

As the condition progresses, horses may adopt the classic “sawhorse stance,” placing their front feet out in front of them to reduce pressure on painful toes.

Horses Most at Risk

Any horse can develop laminitis, but certain factors greatly increase the risk. Overweight horses and ponies have a stronger link to metabolic disorders that contribute to laminitis and have excess mechanical strain on their feet.

Rapidly growing pasture grasses often contain high levels of sugar and starches. Consuming excessive amounts can trigger metabolic changes that may lead to laminitis, particularly in susceptible horses.

Practical Steps for Prevention

Although laminitis cannot always be prevented, owners can greatly reduce the risk through proper management.

The best way to prevent laminitis is to closely manage your horse’s diet. Restrict access to lush pasture, especially during spring and autumn when sugar levels spike, use a grazing muzzle or a dry lot if necessary. Prioritize weight control by keeping your horse at a healthy body condition through a balanced diet and regular consistent exercise.

Routine farrier visits are essential for maintaining proper hoof balance and function. Correct trimming helps distribute weight evenly and supports overall hoof health.

Horses diagnosed with metabolic conditions such Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID/ Cushing’s disease) should receive regular veterinary evaluations. Early management of these underlying conditions can significantly reduce future risk.

Laminitis should always be treated as a medical emergency. Learning to recognize the warning signs, managing known risk factors, and seeking prompt veterinary care, horse owners can greatly improve outcomes. When it comes to laminitis, acting quickly can make all the difference between a manageable setback and a life-changing condition.
